Westmount Condos by Joe Ieradi

IN THE SUMMER of 1975, Joe Ieradi was one of the workers who helped build the Triumph Hotel at Keele Street and Wilson Avenue. Twenty –eight years later, Ieradi is back to rejuvenate the structure – converting it to the luxurious Westmount Condominiums. “The beautiful thing about converting this building to condominiums is that I know the structure is very well built. I saw it go up – I was part of the original team,” says Ieradi.

As for making sure the decorative finishes are top-of –the-line, Ieradi is taking care of that in his typical hands-on fashion. Suites now boast expensive features personally selected by Ieradi, including granite countertops in the kitchens, marble floors and counters in the bathrooms, hardwood flooring and brushed nickel door handles. In addition, the exterior of the hotel will be redone in classic stucco. “Construction is an interesting animal,” Ieradi notes. “You create structures and they are there for generations. You look at a building you built and you want to be proud – that’s why I build things a little better so that I can feel proud to put my name to them.”

Roy Varacalli of Burka – Varacalli Architects, one of the city’s leading architects, is working with Ieradi on the 252 suites at Westmount Condominiums. Featuring one nine-storey tower and one 10-storey tower, opening day prices will range from $97,900 for a bachelor suite with a built-in hideaway bed to $295,000 for a two-bedroom suite with a den. Five appliances are included in the price and on-site amenities will include a pool and a large fitness centre. The building’s main floor will offer a variety of retail services, while other conveniences, including a public library, post office, bank, grocery store, doughnut shop, public high school and a separate high school, are just a short walk away. In addition, Downsview Park, the huge former military base, is only minutes from the site, while the Spadina subway line and Yorkdale Mall are a short bus ride away.

“Keele and Wilson has been identified as a sub-node for the city,” says Anthony Peruzza, spokesperson for Maria Augimeri, councilor for Ward Nine. “It is a good area for intensification and redevelopment and a significant amount of money has been budgeted for and approved. We are just waiting for the construction season to begin.”

“The beautiful thing about converting this building to condominiums is that I know the structure is very well built. I saw it go up – I was part of the original team.”
